[RESOURCE] APS Stamp Chat: Stamp Collecting in Popular Culture by Howard Summers

This is a great American Philately Society (APS) chat session with Howard Summers. Howard has been trying to integrate stamp collecting with film in his works. He points out that media stereotypes of stamp collectors emphasize monetary value. They neglect the aesthetic beauty and the science seen in stamp collecting. The conversation includes how stamping is mentioned in literature.

For example, there is a hitman who collects stamps in the Keller Series by Lawrence Block. There is also talk of how stamping is used in songs and movies. Stamp collecting has been mentioned in over a hundred films. Some notable ones are Charade and Brewster’s Millions. Howard then discusses how stamping has been used in television shows like the The Simpsons and The Avengers. There is again a monetary value linked to the stamps. Howard mentions his books on stamping and film books such as Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide. Three of his books are –

  • The Philatelic Filmography (2007)
  • The Numismatic Filmography (2012)
  • Stamps and Stamp Collecting In Popular Culture (2015)
  • Bibliography of the Philately and Postal History of the British Isles (2020)
